Blowdrying 101

If you’ve ever gotten a blow dry in a salon, you know the powerful, amazing feeling you get by the sheer bounce, volume and shine in your hair. Trying to re-create a professional blow dry hairstyle at home is not as easy but definitely possible. I’m sharing my favorite tips that I’ve learnt over the years, that I’m sure will help you to succeed at blow drying your own hair at home!

Rule number 1: Patience and perseverance

If you have long or thick hair or both like me, you should know that you won’t get the job done in 10 minutes. I blow dry my hair in 40 minutes without a break. Remember, I have naturally curly hair, which means I need to polish every hair section until it’s smooth and shiny. It’s worth my time and energy though because I can enjoy beautiful hair for days!

Rule number 2: The nozzle and the blow dryer

The nozzle helps to get the perfect smooth finish and quickens the drying time.
I recommend to always use one when you blow dry.
When it comes to the blow dryer, look for at least 1,800 watts and multiple heat and air settings. Medium heat is best for pre drying your hair because it saves you a lot of time. High heat manipulates your hair’s shape. If want to go for the wavy look or the perfect straight look, the heat will help you to achieve that.  And there is the cold setting which sets a style and gives a beautiful shine to the hair.

Rule number 3: A Round brush

You can create waves with it, it polishes the hair and even straightens the hair without the need for a straightener. Time-saving tip: The bigger the surface area of the brush, the faster the drying time. Keep that in mind the next time you buy one!

Rule number 4: products

For every hair type and for every hairstyle you want to achieve when blow drying your hair, you must use the right products. Without it, you won’t get far and all the hard work will disappear in minutes. Heat protection is a must if you’re working with heating tools. Next to that you can use cream to eliminate the frizz, reduce blow drying time with the help of a blow dry spray or add styling mousse for volume. Products play a huge role in achieving the perfect blow dry so use them!

Okay, Let’s do this!

Step 1: Blow dry the hair against the direction it lays. This will cause the root to stand up straight rather than fall directly against the scalp.

Step 2: Part the hair off into several sections, this is so important especially for those of you with thick hair. It will cut down the drying time.

Step 3: Roll the sectioned hair around the round brush. Run the hair through it, moving from top to bottom. Move your hair-dryer back and forth constantly over the hair section. Repeat these motions over and over until this section is completely dry. Each section should be 100% dry before you move on to the next. If you leave moisture in it, it will fall flat later.

Once you’re done, choose one or 2 finishing products and apply it to your hair. It could be a gloss, serum, cream, hairspray or an oil, but do not overdo it or it’ll ruin your good work. I personally love to use a little bit of hair spray to finish the look off.

I hope this will help you to achieve the perfect blow dry at home!

Hi
I love your insta page! As I say to my friends and hairdresser you are my hair guru.
I use the heat product you recommended but I still have small hair due to the heat. Blow dry breaks my hair. How should I do ?
